Detty December in Lagos happens in its own universe. The parties run nonstop, the city feels brighter, and there’s always something new happening every hour. If you’re an IJGB trying to enjoy the season without getting overwhelmed, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you make the most of your homecoming.
1. Start with where you’ll stay
Before your calendar fills up, secure your shortlet. It gives you freedom, privacy and comfort after long nights out. Pick a location close to where most of your plans are happening, Lekki Phase 1, VI, Ikoyi, Yaba and Ikeja are the safest bets.
Also there is the option of staying with your family as the prices for shortlets have skyrocketed. To avoid overpriced spaces and last-minute scrambles, read our fair prices for our Shortlet Guide Here.
2. Plan around traffic, not vibes
Lagos traffic in December behaves on its own schedule. A short ride can stretch into an hour, and major event routes are always packed. Keep your activities in the same zone. If your party is in VI, stay in VI. If you’re on the Mainland, focus on Ikeja, Surulere or Yaba for the night. Leaving early helps, but accepting delays is half the peace of mind.
If you stay around Mile2, FESTAC, Orile, Alaba, National Theatre, Trade Fair axis, you can take the Lagos Blue Rail that runs from 6:30 AM-9:00 PM daily except Sundays. It takes you faster to the island. Or use the Lagos Red Rail if you stay around Agbado, Iju, Ikeja, Shogunle, Oyingbo, etc. These two Rail lines can get you to the island quicker than using ride-share.
3. Move smart: groups, rides and rentals
For transport, going in groups is the easiest way to survive. It helps you split fares, stay safe and avoid getting stranded. You can also rent a car for the whole month and hire a driver who knows Lagos roads well — many Lagos car rental companies offer this as a December package.
If you prefer Bolt, Uber or InDrive, expect surge pricing. Groups help you cut costs. And no matter what, carry a power bank, keep your data active and consider having a small spare phone for emergencies.
4. Eat well: upscale or affordable
Food is a big part of the Detty December experience.
High-end spots:
- VI, Ikoyi and Lekki have plenty of fine-dining restaurants perfect for a pre-concert dinner. You’ll find well-plated meals, great cocktails and a polished crowd.
Affordable gems:
- If you’re craving something quick and pocket-friendly, try bukas, suya spots, shawarma stands and small grills. They stay open late in Lekki, Surulere, Yaba and Ikeja.
5. Dive into Lagos events and concerts
December is packed with major concerts. Big names like Burna Boy, Davido and Asake often headline shows around this period. Beyond that, there are Lagos staples that keep the energy high:
Obi’s House
Even in the Day
Sunday at Ilashe
Brew House
Mainland Block Party
It’s easy to get carried away, so choose one major event per night and leave the rest flexible.
6. Relax between the chaos
Detty December isn’t just for parties. Give yourself slow moments so you don’t burn out.
You can unwind at a spa, get a massage or spend a quiet afternoon at a beach house.
If you love movies, the cinemas in Lagos run the latest releases and plenty of Nollywood hits. Nigerian cinema has grown massively, so it’s a good time to catch the newest films.

For those that love art and would like to be submerged in the cultural experience of Nigerians, you can explore galleries like: Nike Centre for Art and Culture, Olori Art Foundation Alexis Galleries, J Randle Centre, etc.
7. Stay connected and stay alert
Group chats, live locations and meeting points help you keep track of friends. Don’t carry anything you can’t afford to lose. Keep a power bank close and make sure your data doesn’t run out in the middle of the night.
With the right planning, Lagos in December becomes a mix of music, culture, food and good memories. Enjoy the city, enjoy your circle and enjoy your homecoming.
