Johnny Drille Biography

Johnny Drille was born John Ighodaro on 5 July 1990 in Edo State, Nigeria. He grew up in a musical home: his father worked as a clergyman and school principal and led the church choir where Johnny first learned to sing. That church training grounded his voice, his sense of melody, and his love for honest songwriting. From these humble beginnings in Benin City he developed the gentle, folk-inflected style that later set him apart in Nigeria’s music scene.

Johnny Drille Education & Early Career

Johnny Drille studied English and Literature at the University of Benin, and he used his education to sharpen his lyrics and narrative instincts. He took his first public music steps in church and on small community stages, then auditioned for national talent shows. He appeared on Project Fame West Africa (season 6) in 2013, which gave him wider exposure and taught him how to perform under pressure. After the show he quietly built his craft posting acoustic covers online, writing songs, producing demos, and learning studio engineering instead of chasing instant stardom. His cover of Di’Ja’s “Awww” in 2015 circulated widely and brought him to the attention of Don Jazzy and Mavin Records.
