Alex Iwobi Made 100 Caps For Nigeria And Was Celebrated By NFF

When Alex Iwobi made his Super Eagles debut in 2015, few could have predicted that he would go on to become one of the most enduring players in Nigerian football history.

This week, the midfielder reached a milestone achieved by only a handful of players before him, earning his 100th appearance for Nigeria and officially joining one of the most exclusive groups in Super Eagles history.

Before Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, the Nigeria Football Federation honored Iwobi with a special presentation to celebrate the achievement, making him just the fourth Nigerian player ever to reach 100 caps for the national team.

The moment felt particularly significant because of the journey that brought him there.

Born in Lagos but raised in England, Iwobi represented England at youth level and had the opportunity to continue his international career with the Three Lions. At the time, it was far less common for highly rated young players born or raised abroad to choose Nigeria over European national teams.

Many promising dual-nationality players often opted to remain with countries perceived to offer greater opportunities on the international stage.

Iwobi chose differently.

In 2015, he committed his future to Nigeria and has remained a consistent presence in the national team ever since.

Over the years, he has represented the Super Eagles at the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and multiple qualification campaigns, becoming one of the team’s most trusted and experienced figures.

His club career has been equally impressive.

After emerging through Arsenal’s famous Hale End academy, Iwobi went on to establish himself in the Premier League with Arsenal before moving to Everton. He later joined Fulham, where he has continued to be one of the club’s most reliable performers.

Along the way, he became the first Nigerian player to reach 300 Premier League appearances, further cementing his place among the country’s most accomplished football exports.

For many Nigerians, the 100-cap milestone represents more than longevity.

It is the story of a player who had other options, chose Nigeria, stayed committed through different generations of the Super Eagles and, a decade later, has become one of the most capped players ever to wear the green and white jersey.

In an era where international allegiances are often debated, Alex Iwobi’s century of appearances stands as a reminder that some decisions become part of a legacy.
