Yaya Touré Becomes The First African Coach To Lead His Team To The UEFA Champions League

For years, Yaya Touré made history on the pitch. Now, the Ivorian football legend is beginning to do it from the touchline.

Touré has become the first African coach to lead a club from the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds into the competition’s league phase, after guiding Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava past Slovenia’s NK Celje in a dramatic final qualifying tie.

The achievement comes just months into Touré’s first senior managerial appointment, making the milestone even more remarkable.

A Dramatic Night In Bratislava

Slovan entered the second leg against Celje after a 1–1 draw in Slovenia. They eventually secured a 2–1 victory after extra time, with Panama international Cristian Martínez scoring the decisive goal in the 100th minute.

The result gave Slovan a 3–2 aggregate victory and sent the club into the Champions League league phase.

For Touré, it was the latest achievement in what has been an extraordinary start to his managerial career.

He took charge of Slovan Bratislava in June 2026, signing a three-year contract after previously developing his coaching experience through assistant roles, including with the Saudi Arabia national team.

From African Football Icon To Trailblazing Coach

Touré’s success carries particular significance because of what he achieved as a player.

The former Côte d’Ivoire international won the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona before becoming one of Manchester City’s greatest midfielders. He won three Premier League titles with City and was named African Footballer of the Year four consecutive times from 2011 to 2014.

He also helped Côte d’Ivoire win the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, ending the country’s long wait for the continental title.

Now, he is building another legacy.

This time, it is from the dugout.

“Proud To Be African”

Following Slovan’s qualification, Touré celebrated his players, staff, club and supporters while also highlighting the significance of the achievement for the continent.

He wrote:

“Proud of my players, staff, the club and our fans! Proud to be in the Champions League together. Proud to be African. Lots more to do. Together!”

The moment was also celebrated inside the Slovan camp. Club captain Andraž Šporar praised Touré’s coaching ability following the historic qualification, adding to the growing recognition around his work.

A New Chapter For African Coaches

Touré’s achievement is significant beyond Slovan Bratislava.

African football has produced generations of exceptional players, but African coaches have historically had fewer opportunities to establish themselves at the highest levels of European club football.

Touré has now reached the Champions League league phase in his first senior managerial role.

His achievement also comes after Nigeria’s Ndubuisi Egbo made history in 2020 by becoming the first Nigerian and African coach to lead a club, KF Tirana, into the Champions League qualifying rounds. Touré has now gone further by taking Slovan through qualifying and into the main league phase.

And The Champions League Adventure Is Just Beginning

Slovan’s qualification means Touré will now lead the club into the expanded 36-team Champions League league phase, where every team plays eight matches against eight different opponents.

The league phase begins on September 8, 2026, giving Touré the opportunity to test his coaching ideas against some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

For an Ivorian who once dominated Europe’s biggest football stages as a player, the symbolism is hard to miss.

Yaya Touré conquered the Champions League as a footballer. Now, he is returning to Europe’s biggest club competition as a history-making African coach.

And if his first few months at Slovan are anything to go by, this could be only the beginning.
