Prudent Gabriel is a Nigerian fashion designer and entrepreneur known for her work in the fashion industry. Through her brand, Prudential Atelier, she has built a career creating outfits for different occasions. Her journey into fashion, however, began in an unexpected way, shaped by experiences that would later influence her career.
Prudent Gabriel’s Early Life and Education
Prudent Gabriel was born and raised in Lagos State, Nigeria, where she grew up in a family of seven, including two stepsiblings. She was a bright student who often came first in her class. She performed particularly well in science subjects and once dreamed of becoming a medical doctor or surgeon.
Her plans took a different direction when her family experienced financial difficulties. After her father lost his job, he worked as a taxi driver while dealing with health challenges. The family later relocated to Akwa Ibom State, where Prudent completed her secondary education.
After secondary school, financial constraints prevented her from continuing her education immediately. She recalled that her family could not afford her JAMB registration fee at the time. During this period, she helped her mother with farm-related activities, including breaking kernels and processing palm oil.
Prudent eventually returned to Lagos, where she stayed with her brother and worked as a waitress in hotels and restaurants. She later enrolled at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where she studied Political Science.
Prudent Gabriel’s Journey Into Fashion
Prudent Gabriel’s journey into fashion began in 2018 after a tailor damaged one of her dresses. Rather than continue depending on others to fix her clothes, she decided to learn how to sew. At the time, she was working as a waitress and had not planned to become a professional fashion designer.
Her first paid sewing job came when someone brought a dress to her for repairs. She earned ₦1,000 for the work, which encouraged her to take the skill more seriously.
Learning to sew was not always easy. Prudent explained that some of the tailors she approached were unwilling to teach her everything she wanted to learn. One tailor reportedly expected her to remain an apprentice for four years. She eventually relied on personal practice and independent learning to improve her skills.
As she continued making clothes, Prudent began sharing her designs on social media. Although her early posts attracted little attention, she continued showcasing her work. Gradually, people became interested in her designs and started placing orders.
Building Prudential Atelier
Prudent Gabriel founded Prudential Atelier in 2019, turning her sewing skills into a fashion business. The brand started in a small room in Ajah, Lagos, where she began creating outfits for customers while working to establish herself in the industry.
Building trust with customers was not always easy. Prudent explained that some people who contacted her through social media were hesitant to visit her workspace for measurements and fittings. To make the process easier, she began visiting customers to take their measurements, helping them place orders without having to come to her location.
Over time, Prudential Atelier expanded its services to include bespoke clothing, bridal outfits and ready-to-wear designs. This allowed the brand to cater to customers seeking custom-made outfits as well as those looking for ready-made pieces.
Prudent Gabriel’s Fashion Academy and Youth Empowerment
In 2020, Prudent Gabriel established Prudential Fashion Academy to train aspiring designers and share the knowledge she had gained from her own experience in fashion. Having faced challenges while learning to sew, she wanted to create an environment where others could develop their skills and learn the craft.
Through the academy, she expanded her work beyond designing clothes to teaching fashion techniques and helping students understand the business side of the industry.
In 2024, Prudent organised a fashion masterclass and youth empowerment programme in Akwa Ibom State. The initiative brought together aspiring designers, established fashion professionals and business experts for practical training and discussions on building fashion businesses.
Selected participants also received support through business funding, industrial sewing machines and scholarships to Prudential Fashion Academy. The programme reflected her efforts to help young people develop practical skills and pursue opportunities in the fashion industry.
Prudent Gabriel’s Awards and Achievements
Prudent Gabriel’s career has earned recognition in fashion design and education. Her achievements include building a fashion brand, training aspiring designers and creating outfits for notable personalities.
In fashion education, Prudential Fashion Academy received the Academy of the Year award at the La Mode Magazine Awards in 2020 and the Academy of the Year award at the Achievers Awards in 2021, according to a 2021 profile published by The Guardian.
Her work as a designer has also brought her commissions from several public figures. These include outfits for Tim Godfrey’s crew, Peggy Ovire for her wedding, Mercy Chinwo for her traditional wedding and reception, Liquorose for the traditional day of the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), and Mabel Makun for her baby’s dedication in 2022. Together, these milestones reflect her work in both fashion design and education, extending her career beyond creating outfits to training the next generation of designers.
Prudent Gabriel’s Personal Life
Prudent Gabriel is married to Nigerian gospel singer Peterson Okopi. The couple announced their engagement in July 2024 and held their civil wedding on September 26, 2024. They later celebrated their traditional wedding in October, followed by their white wedding in Lagos on October 19, 2024.
In August 2025, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child. They also collaborated on a song titled He Is God, which was released in September 2025. In October 2025, reports confirmed the birth of their son, Keon Peterson.
Prudent Gabriel’s Legacy and Impact
