Former NFL player and television host Akbar Gbaja-Biamila is using his platform to reconnect Africans across the world. In recent years, he launched the One54 Podcast alongside Nigerian-American comedian Godfrey Danchimah, creating a space for conversations about Africa’s people, culture, business and global influence.
The podcast has added a new dimension to Akbar’s public image. While many people know him as the co-host of American Ninja Warrior, he now spends much of his time celebrating African excellence and encouraging stronger connections between Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora.
One of the podcast’s most talked-about moments came when Akbar travelled to Nigeria with his wife and children, giving them the opportunity to experience their ancestral homeland for the first time. The trip reinforced his commitment to preserving his Nigerian heritage and sharing authentic African stories with global audiences.
Akbar Gbajabiamila’s Early Life and Football Career
Akbar Oluwakemi-Idowu Gbaja-Biamila was born on May 6, 1979, in Los Angeles, California, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba heritage. He grew up in Crenshaw alongside six siblings in a family that placed a strong emphasis on discipline, education and faith.
Although many associate him with American football, basketball was actually his first love. He only began playing football during his final year of high school, a decision that eventually earned him a scholarship to San Diego State University.
After college, Akbar signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent before spending time with the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins. While his NFL career was relatively brief, it laid the foundation for an even bigger career in television.
Akbar Gbajabiamila’s Television Career
Following his retirement from professional football, Akbar successfully transitioned into sports broadcasting and television.
He appeared as an analyst on NFL Network before becoming one of the hosts of NBC’s American Ninja Warrior. His energetic personality, motivational style and ability to connect with contestants quickly made him one of the programme’s most recognisable faces.
Beyond sports television, he has appeared on several entertainment programmes, authored a children’s book titled Everyone Can Be a Ninja, and established himself as one of the most visible Nigerian-Americans in American media.
Akbar Gbajabiamila’ s Nigerian Heritage and One54 Podcast
Akbar has always spoken proudly about his Nigerian roots, but in recent years he has made Africa a central part of his public work.

Together with Godfrey Danchimah, he launched the One54 Podcast, a platform dedicated to telling authentic African stories and celebrating the people, cultures and opportunities found across the continent’s 54 countries.
The podcast features conversations with athletes, entertainers, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders from Africa and the diaspora — David Oyelowo, Gina Yashere, Boris Kodjo, Kora Obidi, Tiffany Haddish etc. Topics range from business and investment to entertainment, identity, immigration and culture.
Through the show, Akbar regularly challenges outdated stereotypes about Africa while encouraging members of the African diaspora to reconnect with their roots, invest in African communities and help shape the continent’s future.
One of the podcast’s defining episodes documented Akbar’s recent trip to Nigeria with his wife and children. During the visit, he introduced his family to Nigerian history, culture, food, local communities and relatives, describing the experience as an important step in helping his children understand where they come from.
Akbar Gbajabiamila’s Family, Faith and Legacy
Akbar is married to Chrystal Gbaja-Biamila, and together they have four children.
Faith has remained an important part of his life. Raised in a Muslim household, he later became a Christian while attending university, a decision he has often described as life-changing.
He has also remained active in philanthropy, supporting initiatives focused on education, youth development and Parkinson’s disease research.
Today, Akbar Gbaja-Biamila’s influence extends far beyond sports and television. Through broadcasting, storytelling and the One54 Podcast, he continues to represent Nigeria and Africa on the global stage while encouraging a new generation to embrace their heritage with pride.
