Linda Ejiofor, Uche Montana Win Big At AMVCA 2026 In Great Fashion

For one weekend in May, Lagos became the center of African film, fashion, celebrity culture and entertainment conversation. Cameras flashed endlessly, celebrities moved from interviews to red carpets, designers pushed creativity to the edge, and social media timelines exploded as the 2026 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards 2026 took over Eko Hotels & Suites on May 9.

And this year, the conversations went far beyond who won what.

Big Wins, Historic Moments

One of the biggest winners of the night was My Father’s Shadow, which took home Best Movie while also earning major recognition for direction and technical excellence. Akinola Davies Jr. won Best Director for the film, further establishing it as one of the standout projects of the year.

Uzor Arukwe won Best Lead Actor for Colours of Fire, a victory many viewers online described as long overdue and deeply deserved.

But one of the most historic moments of the night belonged to Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman. She won both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first person in AMVCA history to win both categories in the same night. The achievement immediately became one of the evening’s biggest talking points across social media.

Technical categories also drew attention. Colours of Fire won Best Costume Design while Warlord earned Best Makeup. Films like The Herd, Gingerrr, 3 Cold Dishes and To Kill a Monkey dominated conversations around cinematography, sound and storytelling.

Nollywood’s Resilience Was the Real Subtext

Beyond the glamour, AMVCA 2026 quietly reflected the current state of Nollywood itself.

While audiences continue to praise the improved quality and ambition of many productions, industry insiders know the reality behind the scenes is more complicated. Since major streaming platforms slowed down project commissioning in Nigeria, producers have had to work with tighter budgets and fewer large-scale funding opportunities. Many projects are now independently financed, with streaming platforms sometimes acquiring them only after completion and often limiting availability mainly to African audiences rather than giving them full global releases.

Instead of slowing down, many filmmakers adapted.

A growing number of producers have moved aggressively into YouTube releases, and the results have been impossible to ignore. Films like Love in Every Word, Monica 1 & 2 and The Other Woman became massive online successes, while cinema titles like Behind The Scenes proved audiences are still willing to show up for strong stories.

In many ways, Nollywood right now is being powered by resilience, personal funding, loyal fanbases and creators refusing to stop telling African stories despite industry shifts.

And AMVCA 2026 reflected exactly that spirit.

Fashion Completely Took Over the Internet

Of course, no conversation about the AMVCAs is complete without fashion. This year, the red carpet became such a spectacle that many viewers online openly compared it to the Met Gala, with countless people arguing that AMVCA fashion was actually more exciting and creative.

The looks were dramatic, sculptural, theatrical and deeply African.

Osas Ighodaro dominated conversations with multiple standout looks including a striking red sculptural dress and another silver outfit designed with metallic iron sponge textures.

Nana Akua Addo arrived in some of the night’s most talked-about creations including cathedral-inspired, spiral and Livingstone-themed looks that instantly went viral online.

Idia Aisien wore a dress titled Timeless, creatively constructed with wristwatches, while Queen Mercy Atang sparked massive conversation with her bread-inspired dress reportedly made with over 400 loaves of bread.

Lydia Lawrence Nze drew attention with a blooming hibiscus-inspired design, while Nomzamo Mbatha impressed audiences with several elegant wardrobe changes throughout the night.

Doyin David also became one of the red carpet standouts with a futuristic metallic look that photographers and fashion blogs could not stop posting.

At this point, AMVCA fashion is no longer just red carpet dressing. It has become performance art, cultural storytelling and global fashion conversation all at once.

Performances, Speeches and Emotional Moments

Lateef Adedimeji gave one of the evening’s most emotional speeches when he dedicated an award to his wife, Adebimpe Adedimeji, after reports that the couple recently welcomed triplets.

Uche Montana received the Trailblazer Award, confirming her steady rise within Nollywood, while veteran actress Sola Sobowale received the Industry Merit Award for her decades-long contribution to African cinema.

Hosted by Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha, the show moved smoothly and kept audiences engaged both inside the venue and online.

At this point, the AMVCA is far bigger than an award show. It drives fashion trends, shapes celebrity positioning, influences casting power and keeps Nollywood at the center of African pop culture conversations.
