Cosmas Maduka was born on December 24, 1958, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. His family hails from Nnewi, Anambra State, a town known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Tragically, his father passed away when he was just four years old, leaving his mother to care for him and his siblings under extreme poverty. Despite these challenges, Cosmas’s early life shaped his tenacity and entrepreneurial mindset, laying the foundation for his remarkable journey.

Education and Early Career

Cosmas Maduka’s formal education ended early he dropped out of school in elementary three to help his family make ends meet. At the age of 12, he moved to Lagos to apprentice under his uncle in an automobile workshop. His apprenticeship was cut short when his uncle dismissed him, giving him just 200 Naira. This pivotal moment inspired Cosmas to start his own business, initially selling motorcycle spare parts.

One of the most significant turning points in Cosmas’s life came in 1977 when he co-founded Coscharis Motors with just 300 Naira. The name “Coscharis” is a combination of his name, Cosmas, and his wife’s name, Charity. His big break came in 1982 when the Nigerian government granted import licenses to ten companies, including Coscharis Motors. This marked the beginning of the company’s transformation into a major player in Nigeria’s automobile industry.

Throughout his career, Cosmas faced numerous setbacks, including failed businesses and financial struggles. However, his resilience and innovative strategies helped him rebuild each time, eventually diversifying Coscharis into sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and ICT.

Cosmas Maduka is the founder and chairman of the Coscharis Group, a conglomerate valued at over $500 million. The company is the sole distributor for brands such as BMW, Ford, and Jaguar Land Rover in Nigeria. In 2016, he launched Coscharis Farms, a rice cultivation project expected to create thousands of jobs. His contributions to business earned him numerous accolades, including an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) award in 2012.

Together, they had five children four sons and one daughter.
