DAPO ADEGBOYE on his journey to becoming an Award-Winning Broadcaster

With over a decade in broadcasting, Dapo Adegboye has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected voices in political media. As the host of Politics HQ on News Central TV, he sits across from some of the country’s most powerful decision-makers, asking the questions that shape national conversations.

But his journey didn’t begin in television. From the telecoms sector to NTA, Rave TV, and now News Central, Dapo’s path has been one of intentional growth, resilience, and reinvention. A trained policy and diplomacy expert, and a former peace ambassador, his perspective is rooted in structure, strategy, and national development.

Recently crowned Presenter of the Year at the Nigerian Broadcasting Awards, Dapo stands at an interesting point in his career — experienced, evolving, and still deeply committed to the craft.

We sat with him to talk about the journey, the transitions, the challenges, and what it really takes to stay relevant in today’s media landscape.

You recently won Presenter of the Year at the Nigerian Broadcasting Awards. How did you feel and what did that recognition mean to you at this stage of your career?
Dapo Adegboye

The feeling is beyond words…. Absolutely great! A testament to consistency, diligence, and prayers. A confirmation that dreams truly are valid.

Your journey didn’t start in broadcasting, you began in the telecoms sector. What triggered that transition into media, and was it a difficult decision at the time?

True… I was with the telecom sector before transitioning to media. For me it was the quest for purpose and the pursuit of a childhood desire to be on TV. Growing up was pretty difficult, We never had a television for six years and I loved to watch TV. I would practically do a memory download of programs when we visited friends while watching their TV and then playback in my head when I get home… lol. Im grateful to God for how things are now.

You’ve worked across major platforms; from NTA to Rave TV and now News Central. What would you say each of these phases taught you about your craft and the industry?

What I’ve learned over the years is consistency and personal development. Focus on the eventual result not the noise. Keep getting better.

Moving between stations is never just a career move but also a shift in audience and in some cases expectations. How did you navigate those transitions and stay consistent with your voice?

True…. But then, find what works for you and stick to it. I would say I’ve been very strategic over the years on hopping on opportunities.  I ensure our values and ethics match and I guess my audience understands this.

As the host of Politics HQ, you engage directly with governors, ministers, and key political figures. How do you prepare for interviews at that level, and what guides your questioning style?
Dapo Adegboye

Research, Research and more research. Im also blessed with a vibrant team of producers and editors who are exceptional. I prepare well in advance to ensure Im not caught off guard.

You studied Policy and Strategic Studies, and later Diplomacy. How has that academic background shaped the way you approach political broadcasting?

It has formed a solid base for constructive reasoning and communication. Interestingly they seem pretty much interwoven.

Behind the camera, many broadcasters face pressure, rejection, and uncertainty. What would you say has been the most challenging moment in your journey so far?
Dapo Adegboye

Hmmmm…. This is true, I guess the most challenging moment is just the constant zeal to do more and stay relevant. It’s a competitive  and ever evolving space.

You’ve also been affiliated with organisations like PEPOLAC as a Peace Ambassador. How important is it for broadcasters to be involved in initiatives beyond the studio?

It’s a form of corporate social responsibility. Besides it also helps you appreciate life better, gets you closer to the people and relatable

The media landscape is changing rapidly with digital platforms and audience behaviour shifting. How have you adapted to stay relevant in this new era of broadcasting?

The only thing constant in life is change. To stay relevant i move with trend also. I make use of my social media platform to also promote my craft and connect with my audience

Looking back, were there moments you questioned if the journey was worth it? And what kept you going during those times?

Multiple times o…. lol, I guess what has kept me going is the passion for the job and results from time to time.

You’ve interviewed some of the most influential figures in Nigeria. Is there any interview that has stayed with you, one that challenged or changed you in a significant way, or even just amuses you till today?

Yes, one time I interviewed a politician who told me he was being photoshopped live on TV while we played back images and footage of him doing an activity he vehemently denied he wasn’t involved in. “My head won blow”… lol

As someone who has grown through the ranks and now stands as an award-winning broadcaster, what advice would you give to young people looking to build a career in media today?

First establish the “why” you intend to build a career in media. This will form a solid base for diligence, consistency and growth.
