Funpere Elizabeth Sanami; A chat with the lady driving the Ijaw Renaissance.

Funpere Elizabeth Sanami is a true cultural gem, known for her incredible talent as an actor, her dedication to preserving and promoting Ijaw culture, and her entrepreneurial spirit. As the founder of Ijaw Doings TV, she has built a platform that educates and inspires people about the rich traditions of the Ijaw people while managing her role as a wife, mother, and businesswoman. Today, we talk to Funpere about her journey, her passion for storytelling, and how she balances her many roles.

Can you tell us what inspired you to start Ijaw Doings TV and the vision behind the platform?

A lot of people have forgotten their roots, and some even see it as a trend to distance themselves from their culture. Ijaw Doings TV was created to educate and enlighten people about the importance of embracing their cultural heritage because there truly is no place like home. No one can tell our stories, celebrate our food, showcase our attire, perform our beautiful dance steps, honor our masquerades, or share our folklore better than we can. Our vision is to tell these stories authentically, directly from the source, and to present them in the best way possible.

Ijaw culture is rich and vibrant. What aspects of it do you most enjoy showcasing on Ijaw Doings TV?

Honestly, I enjoy showcasing all aspects of Ijaw culture, but our vibrant dance steps combined with our colorful attire hold a special place in my heart. They beautifully capture the energy, elegance, and spirit of our people, and I love projecting that to the world.

As a Cultural Ambassador, how do you ensure your content reaches both Ijaw people and a global audience?

I ensure my content reaches both Ijaw people and a global audience by using the English language, which is widely understood, to communicate effectively. I also incorporate clear illustrations and sometimes use drama to convey messages in a way that is engaging and easy to understand for everyone.

What has been the most rewarding experience so far in running Ijaw Doings TV?

The most rewarding experience has been seeing Ijaws in the diaspora reconnect with their roots and learn to speak their language through the teachings on our platform. It brings me so much joy to know that they now understand the importance of identifying with their culture and heritage.

Which would you say is the most interesting interview you have had and why?

My interview with Gbadia Figbeghawei, also known as Smallest Barber, was truly inspiring. His journey in his career shared valuable lessons for everyone. It has been my most exciting interview so far because it was vibrant, engaging, and served as a source of strength and motivation for many young entrepreneurs.

You were recently recognised as the inaugural IduwiniVoice Ijaw Cultural Icon of the Week. How did that feel, and what does this recognition mean to you?

I was incredibly excited to know that my hard work is being recognized and celebrated. This recognition reinforces the importance of my vision and motivates me to continue sharing our culture with the world. It’s a call to action for more effort, and Ijaw Doings TV will remain dedicated to preserving our beautiful heritage for future generations.

Your acting background adds a unique touch to your content creation. How has your theatre arts training influenced your work with Ijaw Doings TV?

Being a thespian adds a unique dimension to everything I do. My background in acting, scriptwriting, and all aspects of theatre brings a level of professionalism and creativity to my work. It enhances the quality of my storytelling, and I’m truly grateful for the knowledge and skills I’ve gained from my theatre training.

How do you find time to manage your platform, your baking business, and your responsibilities as a wife and mother of three?

Determination is key to balancing everything, but my loving husband makes it even easier by providing all the support I need. I want to take this opportunity to appreciate him for standing by me and helping me manage it all. I love you, *Ejei*—which means ‘my husband,’ in case you’re wondering!

What has been your biggest challenge with Ijaw Doings TV?

Starting small comes with its challenges. One major hurdle is getting people to grant interviews, as many assume you’re not credible due to having fewer followers or not being a celebrity. The financial aspect is also a significant challenge—purchasing equipment can be costly, but when you’re starting small, you often lack the resources. Despite these challenges, the key is to start anyway and build from there.

What has been your biggest joy with Ijaw Doings TV?

My biggest joy is seeing the Ijaw people gain recognition on a global scale. As the fourth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria, we are gradually receiving the acknowledgment we deserve. I’m proud that Ijaw Doings TV plays a role in this by consistently creating content that showcases who we are and what we stand for.

What challenges have you faced in balancing your career, cultural advocacy, and family life, and how do you overcome them?

Hmmmm, one of my major challenges is that my audience often struggles to accept that I have diverse interests. They mainly want to see cultural content, so when I post other types of content, it’s sometimes hard for them to engage. Additionally, the interstate interviews and coverage can be demanding and take me away from home. Thankfully, with my supportive husband, I’ve been able to manage these challenges and stay consistent.

As a content creator, how do you keep your audience engaged and ensure your content remains impactful?

I keep my audience engaged by offering a variety of content with fresh perspectives and different approaches. I also incorporate teachings that are both informative and captivating, ensuring they stay interested and always look forward to more.

What role do you believe social media plays in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, especially for the younger generation?

Social media has played a significant role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage by making it accessible to a wider audience. It ensures that the videos and content we create today will remain available for future generations. The power of social media cannot be overstated—it’s a vital tool for connecting people and sharing our culture with the world.

You wear so many hats—actor, entrepreneur, cultural ambassador, wife, and mother. Which of these roles do you find the most fulfilling, and why?

I find fulfillment in all of my roles because each one is important in its own way. However, being a wife and a mother is especially fulfilling to me as an African woman. Family holds a central place in our culture, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to embrace and fulfill these responsibilities.

Finally, “To anyone, especially women, who want to celebrate their culture, follow their passions, and balance multiple roles, my advice is to start with determination and a clear vision. Never let challenges hold you back—start small if you must, but start. Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your dream. Embrace your culture and showcase it with pride because no one can tell your story better than you. Lastly, remember that balancing multiple roles requires prioritization, hard work, and self-love, but the fulfillment it brings is worth every effort.”

Thank you, Funpere, for sharing your inspiring story and for your dedication to promoting the beauty of Ijaw culture. Your work reminds us all of the importance of embracing and celebrating our heritage while pursuing our dreams. We wish you continued success in all your endeavours and look forward to seeing more of the incredible impact you’re making on and off-screen!
