
Ibadan pulsed with energy on April 16 and 17, 2025, as the Ibadan Travel & Tourism Expo (ITTE) unfolded at De Signature Tower in Jericho. The two-day event brought together hundreds of attendees, including travel professionals, cultural custodians, government officials, and tourism enthusiasts, all united by a shared vision: to harness sustainable tourism as a catalyst for social and economic transformation.
Meet the Conveners: The Oguntoye Twins Leading the Charge

Ambassadors Taiwo and Kehinde Oguntoye, renowned for their initiatives like Twins Tourism and the World Twins Festival, spearheaded ITTE 2025 as they were able to bring together major stake holders from government to law enforcement to service provider and even associations. Their commitment to promoting Nigeria’s tourism potential was evident throughout the expo. With a background in destination development and tourism management, the twins have consistently championed sustainable tourism practices in Africa. Their radio show, “Travel with the Twins,” has been instrumental in showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and tourism assets.
The Opening Moments
The expo commenced with a vibrant display of national pride, featuring renditions of the Nigerian national anthem, the Oyo State anthem, and the Ibadan anthem. Niyi Dahunsi, Deputy Director of Programs at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, served as the compere, setting the tone for the event. Dignitaries, including Hon. Minister of Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, His Excellency Barr. Abdulraheem Adebayo Lawal, and Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Oyo State, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism in Nigeria’s development.
Keynote Insights: Conservation as a Pillar of Tourism
Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, delivered a compelling keynote address. He highlighted the critical role of biodiversity conservation in promoting sustainable tourism. Drawing from his extensive experience in environmental management, Dr. Onoja underscored the need for collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to ensure that tourism development does not compromise Nigeria’s natural heritage.
Panel Discussions: Addressing Safety and Professionalism in Tourism
The expo featured engaging panel discussions tackling pressing issues in the tourism sector.
Is Ibadan Safe for Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism?
Moderated by Niyi Dahunsi, this panel included SP Adewale Osifeso of the Nigeria Police Force, Dr. Edward Akerele from Kwara State University, Otunba Babatunde Adesokan of NANTA, and Anago-Osho of NATOP. The discussion centered on enhancing safety measures and fostering professionalism to boost Ibadan’s appeal as a tourist destination.
Youth in Tourism: Challenges and the Future
Dr. Oludayo Taiwo Gideon moderated a session focusing on the involvement of youth in tourism. Panelists Bolaji Seun, James Akeem Anago-Osho, and Olugbenga Omotayo Sunday shared insights on empowering young people to actively participate in and shape the future of Nigeria’s tourism industry.
Cultural Heritage: Celebrating the Sango Festival
Ambassador Paula Aduke Gómez, Chief Cultural Ambassador to the Alaafin of Oyo, delivered a presentation on marketing cultural heritage sites, using the Sango Festival as a case study. She announced the festival’s recent inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a milestone that emphasises its global significance. Gómez also highlighted ongoing restoration efforts of historical sites and artifacts in preparation for the next festival edition.
Gomez also encouraged Nigerians and Yorubas to embrace their really beautiful culture so it doesn’t go go extinct.
Gomez who is the mother of popular contact creator Thiago Gomez who creates content in Yoruba expressed her love for the culture and how her son is a manifestation of that.
Local Wonders: The Story of Ado Awaye’s Suspended Lake
Oloye Bola Olalere, Project Coordinator of the Oke Ogun Green Revolution, shared his journey of new appreciation for the suspended lake in Ado Awaye, one of only two in the world. This was from a visa denial to go and see the other one in Colorado USA. He spoke about the untapped tourism potential within Nigeria and how infrastructure should be developed around tourists site which is the reason for the Oke Ogun green revolution. He also spoke about the importance of investing in local attractions to stimulate economic growth and community development.
Institutional Engagement to Enhancing Tourism Infrastructure
Representatives from the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria National Park Service engaged with attendees on improving visa processes and enhancing eco-tourism experiences. Their contributions highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a more conducive environment for tourism growth.
Exhibitions of Nigeria’s Rich Tourism Offerings

The exhibition segment featured a diverse array of booths showcasing cultural artifacts, tourism packages, and conservation initiatives. Attendees had the opportunity to explore Nigeria’s vast tourism offerings, fostering connections and potential collaborations among stakeholders.
