Nigeria Launches FreeTV Platform With Over 100 Channels

Nigeria’s television and creative industry has entered a new phase with the official launch of FreeTV, a nationwide digital broadcasting platform designed to give Nigerians access to over 100 channels without monthly subscription fees.

The launch took place in Abuja at the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) and was led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, alongside key stakeholders including the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and partners under Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme.

And from the tone of the event, this was framed as more than a media launch — it was presented as a structural shift in how Nigerians consume television.

FreeTV goes beyond traditional television

One of the most notable aspects of the platform is its multi-access model.

FreeTV will not only be available through satellite and digital set-top boxes, but also through mobile and smart devices via app stores, allowing Nigerians to stream channels on their phones and tablets in a similar way to platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

This move places FreeTV within a modern digital ecosystem, blending traditional broadcasting with on-demand accessibility.

Channels already on the platform

According to information shared around the rollout, several channels are already live on FreeTV, including:

  • Channels TV
  • TVC News
  • NTA
  • Silverbird TV
  • News Central
  • Trust TV
  • Hip TV
  • Soundcity TV
  • Pop Central
  • Spice TV
  • WAP TV
  • NTA Sports 24
  • Lagos Television
  • Oyo TV
  • OSRC TV
  • And several other regional and entertainment broadcasters

The platform is expected to continue expanding as more stations complete onboarding.

Government speaks on impact

FreeTV is part of Nigeria’s long-running Digital Switch Over programme, aimed at transitioning the country from analogue to fully digital broadcasting.

Beyond improving access, the platform is expected to:

  • Expand distribution for Nollywood and local productions
  • Create more advertising inventory for brands
  • Increase demand for original Nigerian content
  • Support independent broadcasters and digital creators

A more connected viewing future

With app-based access, satellite transmission, and an expanding list of channels, FreeTV is being positioned as a hybrid platform that merges traditional TV with modern streaming habits.

For many stakeholders at the launch, the bigger vision is clear — a Nigeria where content is not just produced locally, but distributed widely, accessed easily, and consumed anywhere.

And in that sense, FreeTV is not just a new platform.

It is an attempt to redefine how Nigeria watches itself.
