Nigeria Now Has The World’s Best-Performing Stock Market In The World

For years, conversations about Nigeria’s economy have often focused on inflation, exchange rates and the challenges facing businesses. This week, however, the global financial conversation took a different turn.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Nigeria now has the best-performing stock market in the world in US dollar terms, with the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) overtaking South Korea’s Kospi Index to claim the top spot among the 92 global equity markets tracked by the financial news giant.

The milestone means that, so far in 2026, investors have earned higher returns from Nigerian stocks than from any other major stock market in the world.

It is an achievement few would have predicted just a couple of years ago.

According to Bloomberg, Nigeria’s benchmark NGX All-Share Index has delivered a 67 percent return in US dollar terms since the start of the year, edging past South Korea after a shift in global investor sentiment and renewed confidence in Nigeria’s financial markets.

The rally has been driven by a combination of economic reforms, improving foreign exchange liquidity and a more stable naira, all of which have helped restore investor confidence.

Reporting the development, Bloomberg noted that Nigerian stocks had overtaken South Korea’s market to deliver “the world’s best dollar returns this year,” highlighting the country’s remarkable turnaround in global equity rankings.

The achievement has also been widely reported by leading financial publications around the world, placing Nigeria’s capital market at the centre of international investment conversations.

Beyond the numbers, analysts say the development could have wider implications for the country’s economy.

A stronger stock market makes it easier for businesses to raise capital, attracts more foreign investment, strengthens pension funds invested in equities and provides companies with additional resources to expand operations and create jobs.

Speaking on the country’s economic direction in recent months, government officials have consistently pointed to ongoing reforms aimed at restoring investor confidence and improving market efficiency, developments that many analysts believe have contributed to the exchange’s strong performance.

For many Nigerians, however, the story is about more than finance.

It is another example of a Nigerian institution earning global recognition in a highly competitive space.

At a time when investors have dozens of markets to choose from across the world, the Nigerian Exchange has emerged as the strongest performer of 2026 in dollar terms.

And while market performance can rise and fall over time, this milestone places Nigeria at the top of a global financial ranking that few countries can currently claim.
