Shaboozey Biography

Collins Obinna Chibueze, professionally known as Shaboozey, was born on May 9, 1995, in Woodbridge, Virginia, United States, within the Washington metropolitan area. He grew up in a Nigerian-American household shaped by strong Igbo heritage and cultural duality. His parents are Igbo Nigerians; his father worked as a farmer in Nigeria before attending college in Texas, while his mother worked as a nurse before retiring from her profession. Their immigrant journey instilled discipline, ambition, and cultural pride in him from an early age.

Shaboozey grew up absorbing two powerful influences that would later define his sound. He watched hip-hop music videos on 106 & Park and admired rap culture, while simultaneously observing his father’s cowboy style of dressing and deep love for country music. These contrasting worlds did not confuse him; instead, he blended them.

During his childhood, he also spent two formative years at a boarding school in Nigeria, strengthening his connection to his roots. He later returned to Virginia and graduated from Gar-Field Senior High School in 2013, where he played football as a freshman. As a teenager, he initially planned to become a novelist. However, he began earning money from shooting music videos, photography, and small music gigs during high school, and he soon decided to pursue music seriously.

Today, Shaboozey stands as one of the most innovative Nigerian-American artists redefining the fusion of country, Americana, rock, and hip-hop on the global stage.

Shaboozey Education and Early Career

Shaboozey completed his high school education at Gar-Field Senior High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, graduating in 2013. While in school, he balanced athletics, creative exploration, and entrepreneurial curiosity. Instead of waiting for opportunity, he created it.

In 2014, he released his debut single, “Jeff Gordon,” a sparse trap record built around a stealthy piano beat and layered with overlapping NASCAR race audio. The song referenced NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon and immediately signaled his fascination with blending Southern Americana imagery with modern rap production.

That same year, he founded V Picture Films, a production company he established with the intention of becoming a writer, director, and producer. He did not limit himself to music alone; he intentionally built skills behind the camera, strengthening his storytelling vision across creative mediums.

In August 2016, he signed a recording, co-publishing, and ancillary rights agreement with Terence Sheldon under Homeless Records, later assigned to Kreshendo Entertainment, a division of Republic Records. Under that agreement, he relinquished 50% of the rights to his compositions while it remained active. The publishing agreement ended in November 2019, allowing him greater independence moving forward.

In October 2018, he released his debut studio album, Lady Wrangler, under Republic Records. He followed it in October 2022 with his second studio album, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die, distributed by Empire.
